The Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was a symbol of the division between Communism and Democracy. While it was up, the wall separated families and friends, killed people who tried to express themselves, and suppressed living freely. It was a sign of authoritarianism that ultimately stopped East Germany from progressing as the rest of the world was. When the Berlin Wall fell, East Berlin was significantly set back. To this day, recently the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, West and East Berlin still don't use the same streetlights. When the wall fell, the division created by the USSR still remained and people almost didn't know what to do. Because the wall was up for so long, if you and your child were separated when the Berlin Wall was put up, you wouldn't see your child until they were maybe in their late thirties. When the wall finally fell after 28 years, you would see your child again, but you would barely know who they are or who they have become.
